There is a crytical time between when your high school season ends, and your college athletic carrier starts.  The tendancy is to relax a bit take some time off. That may be the worst thing you can do.  You dont get Stronger Faster Quicker in the season, you struggle to maintain.  The real gains are made in the off season, When your body has time to recover.
